Why not plant the seeds directly on the paper towel and eat the entire plant? Plants like radish and carrots you eat the roots, but the tops are edible as well, just like beets have the root and the beet greens. No one seems to eat the roots unless they're bean sprouts. Why contaminate the roots with soil when you can eat the whole plant?

Do you start everything from seeds? That’s where I have the most trouble.

You could use 100% silicone RTV ruined out with mineral spirits to seal the wood. It won't break down or leach chemicals like plastic does, and could be applied exactly as shellac is. Wikipedia says, "Silicone is a type of syntheric rubber created from bonded silicone and oxygen. Silicone is a very common natural element found in sand and rock - it makes up 28% of the earth's crust."

If those are supposed to be waterproof, I would be concerned with PFAS or plastic impregnated. If the waterproofing is from wax impregnation, I guess that would be safe.

I can’t get the red amaranth to really grow well. I get them to sprout but then they die off pretty quick.

I have been looking for plastic-free hydroponic methods too. I think it's great that you're motivated. I don't have a yard and live in a cold climate so I'm very interested in this topic.

Amen brother. There was just an article about how microplastics have now been found in men's penis tissues. Not even kidding. I honestly don't want anything to do with plastic and this is what has prevented me from pursuing hydroponics with gusto. Awhile back I purchased a large plastic water storage bin and had it customized with holes for plants. Since then, I've had second thoughts and haven't even used it once. Plastic is killing all of us. Please make those bottle adapters out of ceramic, glass or marble perhaps. I would pay more.

Last year I had a bunch of tomatoes growing in buckets. Since I am old and the buckets can get heavy with big tomato plants and nutrients, I put them in little wagons so I could just pull them around to good sun or a bit of shade if needed, etc. Even built a trellis system on one wagon for my peas, squash, and cucumbers, etc.

I grow hundreds of fruit and vegetable plants every year but I also have 2 of your mason jar lids because there are many health benefits to growing microgreens so I do both. I also have indoor hydroponics, I just love growing as much as I can for my family’s health and for food security.

For the water indicator, (if not already solved) I thought about using transparent tubings to make a U-tube (the physics textbook thingies) with two knees or bents, not sure what they are called. Can you use microgreens with this set up that require darkness, like alfalfa? If so, do you need to cover it? And can you reuse those little red pellets? I forgot what you called them.
